Did You Know…Greencastle United Soccer Club Has A Sister Across The Pond???

Greencastle Football Club - Greencastle, Ireland!

Greencastle Football Club is a County Donegal soccer club competing in the Inishowen Football League. Soccer has been played in Greencastle since the early 1900’s with games being played in the early years at Milltown. Following a significant break organized football returned to the area in the guise of local club Blue Peters, named after the area in which the team played i.e. St. Peter’s Point. Following another hiatus of 14 years Thomas Lake founded Greencastle F.C. in 1986 and entered the Inishowen League. At this time the club played its soccer off the Poundtown Road. In 1994 Greencastle, with financial aid from the FAS scheme, purchased a site at Ballybrack and began development work in 1995 to erect club house, a regular playing pitch and an underage pitch. Recent developments in the club’s history has been the construction of three astro turf pitches, which provide modern training facilities for the needs of all at the club. —Soccer-ireland.com/Greencastle F.C.

In 2021, local “history buff” Mike Hoover (of Chambersburg) visited Greencastle, Ireland. A big part of his voyage was “making a transatlantic connection between the two communities and their students”. -Echo Pilot. Through the years, Mike has been an avid supporter of Greencastle-Antrim School District Athletics. At Mr. Hoover’s request, Greencastle United Soccer Club was honored to participate in a traditional “jersey swap” with Greencastle F.C. Upon Mr. Hoover’s return stateside, he presented the Greencastle F.C. jersey to about 30 players, coaches & families from Greencastle United Soccer Club. Today, both jerseys (below) are displayed at the Greencastle United Soccer Complex (Greencastle, PA) and respectfully at Greencastle F.C. (Greencastle, Ireland).
